Biden and Harris offer condolences to Trump after 'losing a loved one'

  • Biden, whose son died in 2015 from a brain tumor, wrote in his tweet, "I know the tremendous pain of losing a loved one — and I know how important family is in moments like these."
  • "Losing a loved one is never easy but know that we are thinking of you," Harris said, retweeting Biden's comment.

Former Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Kamala Harris offered condolences to President Donald Trump after his brother, Robert Trump, died Saturday evening.

After being hospitalized, Robert Trump, the president's youngest brother, died at age 71. Sources told ABC News that he was "very ill."

Trump said late Saturday evening in a statement that his brother was "not just my brother, he was my best friend. He will be greatly missed, but we will meet again."

His daughter, Ivanka Trump, tweeted "Uncle Robert, we love you. You are in our hearts and prayers, always."

Early Sunday morning, Biden and former Second Lady Jill Biden offered condolences to the president.

"I know the tremendous pain of losing a loved one — and I know how important family is in moments like these," Biden tweeted. "I hope you know that our prayers are with you all."

Five years ago, Biden's son former Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden died at the age of 46 while in a battle against brain cancer.

Biden's new running mate Senator Harris also offered her condolences to Trump.

"Doug and I join the Biden family in sending our deepest condolences and prayers to the entire Trump family during this difficult time," Harris said, retweeting Biden's comm. "Losing a loved one is never easy but know that we are thinking of you."
