Trump provoked the deadly Capitol riot via repetitive, false claims about the 2020 presidential election. He was impeached for a second time in January for inciting the insurrection.
The former president has falsely maintained that the election was stolen from him, though he lost fairly to President Joe Biden by more than seven million votes. Contrary to Trump's assertions, there's no evidence of widespread voter fraud linked to the 2020 election.
Cruz helped amplify Trump's election lies by endorsing the former commander-in-chief's effort to overturn the result.
On the day of the insurrection at the Capitol, congressional lawmakers had gathered to certify Biden's Electoral College victory. Even after the violence and mayhem delayed the process, Cruz still objected to the certification.
Ocasio-Cortez has called for Cruz to resign on multiple occasions since the fatal incident at the Capitol on January 6. She's also blamed the deaths that occurred that day on Cruz and other Republicans who supported Trump's effort to overturn the result of the 2020 election, such as Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri.
"Sen. Cruz, you must accept responsibility for how your craven, self-serving actions contributed to the deaths of four people yesterday. And how you fundraised off this riot. Both you and Senator Hawley must resign. If you do not, the Senate should move for your expulsion," Ocasio-Cortez said in a January tweet.
