Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says 'people will die' as a result of the Supreme Court ending the federal right to abortion
- The Supreme Court issued a 6-3 decision on Friday overturning Roe v. Wade.
- AOC is warning that the loss of a constitutional right to abortion will cause pregnant women to die.
Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez warned that poor and marginalized women will die as a result of the Supreme Court's revocation of the constitutional right to an abortion.
On Friday, the court issued a 6-3 decision overturning both Roe v. Wade and Casey v. Planned Parenthood, and liberal justices warned in their dissent that more rights could be on the line.
"Overturning Roe and outlawing abortions will never make them go away," she wrote. "It only makes them more dangerous, especially for the poor [and] marginalized."
"People will die because of this decision," she added.
Insider's Oma Seddiq and Madison Hoff previously reported that the looming high court decision could undo economic gains made by women since the original Roe decision in 1973.
"This is going to create just a perfect storm of concentrated human misery," Kimberly Kelly, a sociology professor focused on abortion politics at a Mississippi college, told Insider before the decision.
"The people who will lose access will be Black women, brown women, poor women, and young women," she added. "If Roe is overturned, abortion is going to become a function of class privilege. Affluent women who can travel, will travel. Only women with certain levels of economic resources will be able to travel."
Ocasio-Cortez added that Democrats "will never stop until abortion rights are restored in the United States of America."
Later on Friday, Ocasio-Cortez spoke outside the Supreme Court amid ongoing protests.
"This is not something that is going to be solved in a day, or in an election, or in a year," she said. "Because we got to strap in. This is a generational fight."
