A Miami police officer wore a Trump 2020 mask and his uniform to a polling site, and now faces disciplinary action
  • A police officer in Miami, Florida, was photographed in full uniform wearing a Trump 2020 mask at an early-voting polling site this week.
  • Miami-Dade Democratic Party chairman Steve Simeonidis, who took and published the photo, identified the officer as Daniel Ubeda.
  • Miami police and city authorities did not identify Ubeda by name, but said the officer would face disciplinary action.
  • Mayor Francis Suarez of Miami said the officer was waiting in line to cast his vote, so was not working at the time.
  • Surarez called his actions "unacceptable" nonetheless.
  • Florida law forbids officials from using their authority to coerce or intimidate people into voting for a particular political party.

A Miami police officer faces disciplinary action after he went to an early-voting polling site in uniform while also wearing a Trump 2020 face mask.

The officer, identified as Daniel Ubeda, was photographed wearing full uniform at the Government Center in Miami.

He had a police badge, gun, and a name tag that says "Ubeda." His mask said "Trump 2020: No more bulls---".

The photo at the polling site was taken and tweeted on Tuesday by Steve Simeonidis, the chairman of the Miami-Dade Democratic Party.

In his tweet, Simeonidis said Ubeda's action was "city-funded voter intimidation" and called for his suspension from the police force.

Simeonidis later told the Miami Herald that Ubeda had "laughed it off" when he was questioned about the mask.

Florida law forbids any "officer or employer of the state" from using their authority to interfere with an election or coerce or intimidate people into voting for a particular political party.

State law also prevents people campaigning for a particular candidate from being within 150 feet from polling sites. Simeonidis told the Herald that Ubeda was "well within" that distance.

The Miami Police Department and city authorities did not name the officer, but confirmed that the man photographed was one of their officers. They said he would be disciplined, but did not specify how.

In a statement to CBS Miami Miami Police Chief Jorge Colina said: "We are aware of the photograph being circulated of a Miami Police officer wearing a political mask in uniform.

"This behavior is unacceptable, a violation of departmental policy, and is being addressed immediately."

Deputy Police Chief Ron Papier told the Herald that the department would take "appropriate disciplinary action" against Ubeda. He said "the mask has offensive language, which is also a violation of department policy."

Mayor Francis Suarez of Miami told reporters on Tuesday that the photo was taken while the officer was in line to cast his own vote. He condemned his actions and said he would be disciplined.

"The City of Miami and the Miami Police Department do not support or endorse any candidate for a political party or elected office. The involved officer was not authorized to wear a mask with political messaging, nor was he given any administrative direction to support a political candidate or political party," Suarez said.

"His actions have violated departmental policy and he will be disciplined."

Suarez also called the officer's actions "unacceptable" and "something that we cannot condone and we do not accept."

Business Insider has contacted the Trump campaign for comment.

The president has for months personally encouraged his supporters to go to polling places around the country and monitor votes being counted.
