A federal judge will weigh unsealing court documents related to former President Donald Trump's attempts to block aides from testifying in a January 6 criminal probe following requests from journalists.

The aide's testimony would be provided to a grand jury investigating attempts to overturn the 2020 election. Reporters from Politico and The New York Times requested the release of secret documents that pertained to Trump's efforts.

Kyle Cheney of Politico shared the letter he sent US District Court Judge Beryl Howell on October 18 requesting the unsealing of a "historic ruling that bears on the ability of former presidents to control, and even silence, ex-advisers in matters of urgent national significance."

Court records show that Howell was considering the requests and has instructed the Justice Department to respond by November 15.
