A GOP political action committee is committing $20 million to back representatives in Congress who voted against fellow Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy for speaker of the House, according to a memo from the group published by Politico.
The Club for Growth, the PAC that's pledging to support what it calls the "Patriot 20," describes itself as the "leading free-enterprise advocacy group in the nation" and operates by "pinpointing key bills up for debate in Congress and exerting maximum pressure on lawmakers to vote like free-market, limited government conservatives."
The memo, written by the Club for Growth's president, David McIntosh, says that the group's priority in the primary elections is to support any of its members against challenges from moderate Republicans looking to primary anyone from the "Patriot 20."
"Moderate donors and candidates seeking to settle scores should save their money," McIntosh wrote, "because we are prepared to win at all costs."
Once the general election comes around, McIntosh promised to financially support any of the "Patriot 20" whose seats have been targeted as vulnerable by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. These representatives include Rep. Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, and Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado.
Support from the Club for Growth will be especially helpful for Boebert, who narrowly defeated Democrat Adam Frisch in the 2022 election by less than 600 total votes. According to recent filings with the Federal Elections Commission, Frisch's 2024 campaign reported having $2.5 million in cash on hand while Boebert's had just $1.4 million.
