A 21-year-old Democratic Kansas state lawmaker was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of domestic violence, The Kansas City Star reported, citing police records.

Rep. Aaron Coleman was arrested in Overland Park, Kansas, on Saturday evening and booked into jail, where he remained until late Sunday morning, the newspaper reported, citing Johnson County Sheriff's Office records.

The circumstances of the arrest are not immediately known. Coleman is set to appear before a judge via video on Monday afternoon.

Coleman was elected to office in November 2020 after running unopposed. During his campaign, he admitted to spreading so-called revenge porn and was accused of abusive conduct.

Last June, he admitted to instances of bullying and distributing revenge porn when he was in middle school. He apologized and blamed the incidents on his troubled youth.

Last August, a woman also accused him of choking and encouraging her to take her own life in December 2019 after she joked that she would break up with him.

Last week, Coleman was banned from offices at the Kansas Department of Labor for what the agency said was "disruptive, intimidating and berating behavior" toward a security officer, KSHB reported.

Coleman's office did not return Insider's request for comment.

In a Sunday statement, Kansas House Democratic Leader Tom Sawyer called the developments "extremely disturbing" and called on Coleman to resign.

"His constituents and the State of Kansas would be better served if he were to resign and get the help he badly needs," Sawyer said.

"However, I want to reiterate again that the House Democratic Caucus does not condone this behavior in any way, shape, or form."
