  • A resurfaced 2016 video shows Hillary Clinton accusing Donald Trump of paying no income tax after he refused to make them public.
  • "He doesn't want the American people ... to know that he's paid nothing in federal taxes," Clinton said during the first presidential debate on September 26, 2016.
  • Trump, in response, said paying no taxes "makes me smart."
  • The New York Times reported Sunday that Trump paid $0 in income tax for 11 years, $750 in 2016, and the same in 2017.
  • Trump has since claimed those figures are inaccurate, and says he paid "a lot" of tax.

A video from 2016 in which Hillary Clinton accused Donald Trump of paying no income tax is circulating on social media, after The New York Times reported that he paid $0 for years.

Clinton, speaking at the first presidential debate on September 26, 2016, made the claim after moderator Lester Holt asked why Trump was first candidate in decades not to release his tax returns.

She said: "He doesn't want the American people ... to know that he's paid nothing in federal taxes because the only years that anybody's ever seen were a couple of years when he had to turn them over to state authorities when he was trying to get a casino license, and they showed he didn't pay any federal income tax."

Her assertion that Trump was paying little in taxes is largely corroborated by the Times's reporting this week.

Leaning forward to interject, Trump said: "That makes me smart."

A clip of the exchange, posted to Twitter early Monday by Maya Harris, a lawyer and sister to Kamala Harris, had been viewed 1.8 million times in around ten hours.

In the debate, Trump went on to say his income was under an audit by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) so he couldn't release them. Trump said that if he paid tax they would be "squandered" by the government anyway.

In a landmark report published Sunday, The New York Times, who obtained a copy of Trump's tax returns, said that, in 11 of the 18 years that were examined Trump paid $0 in federal income taxes.

The Times said that Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes in 2016 and the same in 2017.

Trump called the report "totally fake news."
