The White House told House Democrats on Tuesday it won't be cooperating with them on their impeachment inquiry, setting the stage for a momentous constitutional clash between the legislative and executive branches of government.

In a letter sent to the House Democrats spearheading the probe, White House Counsel Pat Cipollone declared that the Trump administration wouldn't cooperate with a process it viewed as constitutionally invalid.

"In order to fulfill his duties to the American people, the Constitution, the Executive Branch, and all future occupants of the Office of the Presidency, President Trump and his Administration cannot participate in your partisan and unconstitutional inquiry under these circumstances," the letter read.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly lashed out at the proceedings, saying its another way for Democrats to overturn the results of the 2016 presidential election and deny him a second term in office.
