President Donald Trump and his predecessor President Barack Obama are tied in Gallup's annual poll for the most admired man in the US.
Every year, Gallup conducts an open-ended survey asking respondents to offer up the name of the man and woman they admire the most instead of presenting a list of options to choose from.
Obama has held the spot of most-admired American man for 12 years in a row, including after leaving office in 2017. Americans have named the sitting president as the most admired man in 58 out of the 72 years Gallup has been surveying Americans for the man and woman they admire the most.
In 2019's poll, conducted from December 2 to 15, 18% of respondents named Trump as the man they admired the most with an additional 18% naming Obama. No other man was named as most admired by more than 2% of respondents.
The results broke down sharply along party lines, with 41% of self-identified Democrats choosing Obama and 45% of Republicans naming Trump as the man they admired most. Independents were split approximately down the middle, according to Gallup.
Former first lady Michelle Obama was the most admired woman of 2019, with 10% of respondents naming her as the woman they admired most, compared to 15% who named her as the most admired woman in 2018.
Five percent of respondents named current first lady Melania Trump, and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, and Swedish teen climate activist Greta Thunberg each got 3% of the vote.
Likely due to their high visibility and name recognition, presidents and first ladies have dominated the most admired man and woman rankings. Former presidents make up seven of the 10 men with the most top 10 finishes in the most-admired rankings, and former first ladies make up five of the 10 women with the most top 10 finishes in the poll.
The late evangelical pastor Billy Graham has finished in the top 10 most admired men 61 times, and the United Kingdom's Queen Elizabeth II is the woman with the most top-10 finishes, placing in the top ten 51 times.
