Colorado's governor mocked President Donald Trump for saying he is building the US-Mexico wall in the state, suggesting that he needs "basic geography" lessons like a kindergartner.
Trump said in a speech in Pittsburgh on Wednesday that "We're building a wall in Colorado."
"And we're building a wall on the border of New Mexico. And we're building a wall in Colorado. We're building a beautiful wall. A big one that really works - that you can't get over, you can't get under," he said.
Jared Polis, Colorado's Democratic governor, pointed out on Facebook that Colorado is not on the US border with Mexico.
"Well this is awkward...Colorado doesn't border Mexico," he wrote.
"Good thing Colorado now offers free full day kindergarten so our kids can learn basic geography."
Other politicians, including former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, also mocked Trump's statement.
Hickenlooper tagged New Mexico Senators Martin Heinrich and Tom Udall in a tweet, pointing out that Colorado shares a border with the US state of New Mexico - and not the country of Mexico.
"Hey @TeamHeinrich & @tomudall do one of you want to break it to @realDonaldTrump that Colorado's border is with New Mexico, not Mexico...or should I?" he wrote.
On Thursday morning, Trump tweeted that he had mentioned a border wall in Colorado "kiddingly" and that he was referring "to people in the very packed auditorium, from Colorado & Kansas, getting the benefit of the Border Wall!"
A border wall between the US and Mexico was a major campaign promise from Trump in the run up to his election in 2016.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that construction is underway.
But no new sections of border wall have been built since he took office. Instead, existing barrier fencing has been replaced and repaired.
Trump has faced roadblocks from Democrats who oppose the wall, and from private citizens who own the land he wants to build on.
Some states have sued Trump over his efforts to build the wall, including a coalition of 16 states that oppose his efforts to build the wall without approval from Congress. Trump is instead taking money from other projects, including military projects.
