The overall number of global coronavirus cases has surpassed the 172.9 million mark, while the deaths have increased to over 3.71 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

As of Friday morning, the total number of cases stood at 172,910,966 the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.

The US accounted for the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 34,174,752 and 611,611 respectively, according to the CSSE.

India came in second place with 28,574,350 infections and 340,719 deaths.
