Cash, drugs and liquor worth ₹57 crore seized by EC during Delhi Election

• The Election Commission seized more than ₹57 crore during the Delhi Election 2020.
  
• According to the Election Commission Officer of Delhi, cash worth ₹12.33 crore was confiscated; so was liquor valued at more than ₹2.83 crore.
  
• Narcotics, bullion, and jewellery accounted for ₹42.32 crore of the seizures.
  

Election Commission seized cash and others worth ₹57 crore during Delhi assembly elections. This is around twice of what was seized during the Lok Sabha elections in 2019, around ₹34 crore.

“It is really a matter of great satisfaction that compared to the 2015 elections, our enforcement effort and outcome has been far better,” said the Election Commission Officer of Delhi told reporters during a press conference.

According to the Election Commission, cash only accounted for ₹12.33 crore of the total amount and liquor worth ₹2.83 crore were confiscated. The lion’s share came from other things like narcotics, bullion and jewellery worth ₹42.32 crore — which accounted for more than three-quarters of the sum.

“We have been taking preventive action under the Arms Act, Excise Act, DPDP Act for defacement of property and under the Delhi Police Act,” he said.

Voting still underway

In Delhi, 1.47 crore people were eligible to vote with the voter turnout at 57.17% at 7:48 pm. There are 13,750 polling stations across the city at 2,688 locations. The Election Commission said that voting was still underway at many locations across the city.

“Till everyone who was at the polling stations at 6:00pm has voted, the polling will go on at the polling stations concerned,” stated the officer.

He also pointed out that over 488 voters with disability were eligible to vote through postal ballots and 429 have submitted their votes so far. Of the 2429 eligible senior citizen voters, 2257 have voted.

No Delhi Metro employees and media covering the election opted to vote through postal ballots. However, 19 employees of the Northern Railways submitted the requisite forms, and all of them have submitted their votes.

Exit polls currently predict an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to win. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may dent their majority.
