In 2015 general elections conducted in the Uttam Nagar assembly seat, AAP’s Naresh Balyan scored 85881 votes and emerged as the winner. He overtook the BJP candidate Pawan Sharma who scored 55462 votes. In 2013 elections for the Delhi assembly, it was Pawan Sharma who won from this seat defeating the INC candidate Mukesh Sharma. The vote count they got was 48377 and 42031 respectively.

Uttam Nagar state assembly seat comes within the jurisdiction of West Delhi parliamentary district of Delhi. In the Uttam Nagar seat, there is a total number of 2,32,128 voters. This count comprises 1,26,674 males, 1,05,444 females and 10 third gender electors. The present five year term of the Delhi Vidhan Sabha will end on 22 February 2020. Hence along with the other 69 constituencies of Delhi, Uttam Nagar will go for general elections in February 2020 to select the next set of MLAs who will form the next government at the Delhi Vidhan Sabha.

Right from 1993 elections, Mukesh Sharma got elected from Uttam Nagar constituency four times consistently. In 1993 elections for the Delhi Vidhan Sabha, he scored 25193 votes and defeated the BJP candidate Kamla Choudhary. In 1998 elections, he overtook the BJP candidate Naresh Tyagi by getting 48146 votes. In the 2003 elections, he won with 70495 votes and went to the Delhi assembly. The runner up in this election was BJP’s Rajesh. In 2008 elections, Mukesh Sharma got 46765 votes and became the MLA for the fourth time in line. The BJP candidate who came second in this election was Pawan Sharma.
