In the 2015 elections, the winner from this assembly seat was Ram Niwas Goel. He scored 58523 votes against the BJP contestant Jintender Singh Shunty who got 46792 votes. Earlier in 2013 general elections, Jitender Singh Shunty represented BJP and won this seat. The runner up in this election was INC candidate Narender Nath. In two previous elections conducted in 2008 and 2003, Narender Nath of INC was the winner and Jitender Singh Shunty was the runner up. IN 2008 elections, Jitender Singh Shunty represented the BJP and in 2003 he fought for IND. In 1998 assembly elections, Narender Nath had won the BJP contestant Jyotsna Aggarwal.

Shahdara is a state legislative assembly constituency occurring within the jurisdiction of the East Delhi parliamentary district of Delhi. The total number of voters in this assembly seat is 1,69,896 comprising of 90,548 males, 79,342 females and 6 third gender electors. The election commission of India has announced general elections for all the 70 assembly seats in the Delhi Vidhan Sabha. Since the present government’s five year ruling term will end on 22 February 2020, the upcoming elections in Delhi will decide the MLAs from each of the 70 seats who will represent them in the new government that will be formed post elections.

From 1951 to 2015, the Shahdara assembly seat had seen 10 assembly elections in total. In all these elections, INC had won this seat 6 times. BJP had won this constituency twice. AAP and JNP had won this seat one time each.
