Sangam Vihar state assembly constituency occurs within the South Delhi parliamentary seat of Delhi. Sangam Vihar assembly seat has a total number of 163982 voters consisting of 97432 men, 66537 women and 13 third gender electors. The Delhi assembly is presently ruled by the AAP government. The present five year term of the ruling party ends on 22 February 2020 and hence all the 70 Vidhan Sabha seats of Delhi assembly including the Sangam Vihar assembly seat will go for general elections in February 2020. The said elections will decide who will become the MLAs from these seats to form the new government post elections.

In 2015 general elections, AAP candidate Dinesh Mohaniya won from this seat scoring 72131 votes. The runner up candidate during this election as Shiv Charan Lal Gupta of BJP who got 28143 votes. In 2013 elections, it was Dinesh Mohaniya of AAP who won from this seat. He scored 24851 votes against the BJP candidate Shiv Charan Lal Gupta who got 24074 votes. Shiv Charan Lal Gupta had won in the 2008 elections by scoring 20332 votes representing BJP. He had defeated the INC candidate Amod Kumar Kanth who got 16743 votes.

Sangam Vihar is a general seat open for all candidates to contest for the assembly polls. This seat has existed since the 2008 elections. So far, the BJP had won from here once and AAP had won from here twice. The vote score of 72131 got by Dinesh Mohaniya in 2015 elections is the highest any contesting candidate had ever scored from this assembly constituency.
