Najafgarh state assembly constituency is a very prominent assembly seat occurring within the portals of the South West Delhi parliamentary district. In Najafgarh assembly seat, there are 2,32,529 voters in total with the figure consisting of 1,24,767 males, 1,07,755 females, and 7 third gender voters. The term of the present assembly will end on 22 February 2020. Najafgarh assembly seat will go for general elections in February 2020 along with the other 69 assembly constituencies of Delhi in order to select the MLA who will represent each of this seat in the Delhi assembly.
The last general elections for assembly in Najafgarh took place in 2015. The winner of this election who became the MLA for this seat was AAP’s Kailash Gahlot who scored 55598 votes. He defeated the INLD candidate Bharat Singh who got 54043 votes. The runner up candidate of the 2015 elections Bharat Singh had earlier got selected for the Delhi assembly three times from this seat. In 1977, he defeated JNP’s Mahinder Singh scoring 37076 votes. In 1983, he scored 45610 votes and defeated the LKD candidate Tarif Singh. In 2008 polls for the Delhi assembly, Bharat Singh overtook the INC contestant Kanwal Singh by scoring 34028 votes.
In all the elections conducted for the Delhi Vidhan Sabha between 1951 and 1985, INC won consistently holding this seat for so long. While IND won this seat in 1993, the INC grabbed it from them once again in 1998. After 1998, INC could not win this seat so far.
