The last assembly elections in Kasturba Nagar was held in 2015. The winning candidate of these elections was Madan Lal of AAP. He overtook the BJP candidate Ravinder Choudhry. Their vote scores were 50766 and 34870 respectively. Madan Lal also won in 2013 elections representing the AAP. During those elections, the runner up candidate was Shikha Roy of the BJP. They scored 336 and 28935 votes respectively.
Kasturba Nagar state assembly constituency of Delhi comes within the jurisdiction of the New Delhi parliamentary seat. This seat has a total number of 147896 voters with the list consisting of 83142 men, 64752 women and 2 third gender voters. The present five year term of the ruling government at the Delhi Vidhan Sabha ends on 22 February 2020. Hence all the 70 constituencies of the Delhi assembly including Kasturba Nagar will go for elections in February 2020 as per the election commission’s announcement.
In the 2008 general elections, the winning candidate was Neeraj Basoya of INC. The runner up contestant Sushil Choudhary of BJP scored 31323 votes. Earlier in 1998 and 2003 elections, Sushil Choudhary of BJP became the MLA of this assembly seat two times in row scoring 20146 votes and 17949 votes respectively. In 1983 and 1993, Jagdish Lal Batra of BJP scored 9678 votes and 25215 votes respectively and won the elections. From 1983 to 2008, the Kasturba Nagar constituency was the stronghold of BJP which won from this seat in four elections consecutively till INC won in the 2008 elections. The arrival of AAP on the scene in 2013 worked in its favor and AAP won the past two elections from here.
