Karawal Nagar state assembly constituency falls within the portals of the North East Delhi parliamentary district of Delhi. The total number of assembly constituencies in the Delhi Vidhan Sabha is 70. The present ruling term of AAP which won from the 2015 elections will end in February 2020. Hence the election commission has notified of the assembly elections for all the 70 assembly constituencies of Delhi in February 2020. The upcoming elections will choose the MLAs for the different constituencies of the Delhi assembly to form the new government for the next five year term post elections. The total number of voters in Karawal Nagar seat is 2,43,710 comprising of 1,38,831 males, 1,04,863 females, and 16 third gender voters.

The sitting MLA of the Karawal Nagar seat is Kapil Mishra of AAP who won this seat in the 2015 general elections. The ruling party of the Delhi assembly is AAP headed by its founder and the sitting CM of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal. The runner up in the 2015 election was Mohan Singh Bisht of BJP. Their vote scores were 101865 and 57434 respectively. Earlier, Mohan Singh Bisht won from this seat and became the MLA in four elections conducted in 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013.

The Karawal Nagar assembly seat has existed since 1993. Till date, this assembly seat has seen 6 general elections. In all these elections, BJP has won 5 times from here losing the seat to AAP in the 2015 elections. While Mohan Singh Bisht won this seat 5 times on behalf of BJP, Ram Pal won this seat for BJP once in 1993 elections.
