Gandhi Nagar state legislative assembly constituency falls within the jurisdiction of East Delhi parliamentary district of Delhi. In total there are 70 assembly constituencies in Delhi Vidhan Sabha. The present five year ruling term of the Delhi Legislative Assembly will end on 22 February 2020 and hence all the 70 seats including Gandhi Nagar will go for general elections in February 2020 to choose the next set of MLAs who will represent these seats in the Delhi assembly. The total number of voters in Gandhi Nagar constituency is 1,68,775. The figure comprises 95,791 males, 72,982 females, and 2 third gender electors.
The last assembly elections were held in the Gandhi Nagar constituency in 2015. The winner of this election was Anil Kumar Bajpai who scored 50946 votes. He defeated the BJP contestant Jitender who scored 43464 votes. From 1993 to 2015, this seat was held by INC candidate Arvinder Singh Lovely. He was elected for the Delhi assembly from the
Gandhi Nagar seat four times in 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013. In all these elections, he defeated the different BJP candidates who scored the second highest votes in this seat.
IN 1972 elections, the winner was INC’s Inder Singh Azad. In 1977 elections, the winner was Som Nath of JNP. IN 1983 elections, Sukhan of INC was elected from here and in 1993 elections, Darshan Kumar Bahl of BJP won this constituency. From 1972, Gandhi Nagar assembly seat saw the general elections nine times. INC won from here in six elections while BJP, JNP and AAP won this seat one time each.
