After Gautam Gambhir and Babita Phogat, BJP ropes in Saina Nehwal too

  • Badminton player Saina Nehwal made her debut in politics with the Narendra Modi-led BJP.
  • The announcement came days before the Delhi Vidhan Sabha Election, which will kick off on February 8.
  • With this, she joins the list of sports persons like Gautum Gambhir and Babita Phogat joining politics.
Badminton player and India’s first woman shuttler to feature in a world ranking Saina Nehwal just made her debut in politics. She joined the Narendra Modi-led BJP.

Nehwal, 29, has over 24 international titles to her name — including Olympics and Commonwealth games. Nehwal is one of India's most successful badminton players. The report comes days before the Delhi Vidhan Sabha Election, which will commence on February 8.

She is now one of the many sports stars that BJP has managed to attract like Gautum Gambhir and Babita Phogat Former cricket player Gambhir joined the party in 2019. Apart from being a star campaigner, he is the MP of East Delhi constituency.

Female wrestler Babita Phogat also joined the BJP right before the last general election. She contested elections from Dadri constituency and lost.

On January 10, BJP announced its 15-member election committee constituting the president Manoj Tiwari and all the MPs in the state including Vijay Goel and Satish Upadhyay. This is the first time that the national capital is going to polls after the Lok Sabha elections. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP bagged all the seats in Delhi.

Delhi assembly polls will commence on February 8, 2020. The three main parties contesting elections constitute the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC). Both BJP and AAP has announced their candidates. While AAP has fielded all the 70 candidates.
