A woman in Wisconsin was found guilty on Tuesday of poisoning her friend's water with a lethal dose of eye drops and stealing thousands of dollars from her, according to court records.

After almost 10 hours of deliberation, a Waukesha County jury found Jessy Kurczewski guilty of one count of first-degree intentional homicide and two counts of felony theft of more than $10,000, court records show.

Kurczewski, 39, was accused of pouring Tetrahydrozoline, a chemical found in Visine, into the drink of Lynn Hernan, which resulted in her death, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

She was also accused of defrauding Hernan out of nearly $300,000 in the two years leading up to her death in October 2018, the Sentinel reported.

Hernan, 62, was found "unconscious" and "not breathing" at her home in Pewaukee, Wisconsin, in October 2018 with a large amount of crushed medication on her chest and a plate to her left with crushed medicine on it, according to a criminal complaint filed by Waukesha County in 2021 and cited by the Associated Press.

Investigators initially believed Hernan had died of a drug overdose based on preliminary observations, per the criminal complaint.

At the time, Kurczewski told authorities that she had visited Hernan every other day for six months before her death to look after her, and that she believed she could be suicidal, the complaint said.

However, a cousin of Hernan's asked the Waukesha County Medical Examiner's Office to carry out a medical examination, which later found the victim died of a fatal dose of Tetrahydrozoline, per the complaint.

In a letter dated September 2019, a doctor assessed that based on the autopsy results, the cause of Hernan's death was homicide — not suicide or an accident, the complaint stated.

Kurczewski was arrested and subjected to six rounds of interviews with detectives in charge of the case, per the complaint.

She repeatedly denied killing Hernan, saying that she did not give her eye drops or stage her suicide, but later admitted to bringing her a drinking bottle containing six bottles' worth of Visine, according to the complaint.

As Judge Jennifer Dorow read the verdict, Kurczewski could be seen sobbing in court, a livestream by Court TV showed.

Kurczewski's sentencing hearing is scheduled for December 7, according to court records.
