A woman in California was detained by the police and accused of driving a stolen car with a handwritten license plate.

The Benicia Police Department said in a Facebook post on Friday that an officer was out patrolling in the wee hours when he saw "this beautifully handwritten license plate on a car."

The police department included a photograph of the vehicle — a silver Kia Rio LX.

Instead of a typical metallic license plate, the Kia had its registration number emblazoned on a piece of paper with black marker ink. The paper was plastered onto the vehicle with tape.

"A quick check of the vehicle showed that it was reported stolen out of Alameda," the Benicia Police Department said, adding that the driver, Angel Rachiene Bolton, was detained and booked into the Solano County jail.

Bolton, 38, was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and unlawful paraphernalia, per arrest records.

"We know we are not superheroes, but just FYI this is NOT a way to get one over on us," the Benicia Police Department said earlier in its post.

Representatives for the Benicia Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.
