An investigation into a sex party in the Catholic church where a participant overdosed seems to have forced a bishop to resign
- The Pope quickly accepted the resignation of a Polish bishop whose diocese was rocked by a scandal.
- Police are investigating one of the bishop's priests following an incident at his church apartment.
The Pope accepted the resignation of a Polish bishop on Tuesday after his diocese was rocked by a scandal involving an alleged gay orgy at a priest's church apartment.
Bishop Grzegorz Kaszak, 59, offered his resignation on September 29, with Pope Francis accepting it unusually swiftly, according to the Associated Press.
Though the Vatican did not give an explicit reason for the resignation, with the Press Office of The Holy See not immediately responding to Insider's request for comment, it comes shortly after police launched an investigation into a member of his diocese.
In a letter announcing that he had stepped down, Kaszak also gave no clear reason for his departure as Bishop of Sosnowiecka.
It follows an announcement by the Diocese of Sosnowiecka earlier this month, which revealed that one of Kaszak's priests was placed under criminal investigation in connection with an incident that occurred on the night of August 30 and the morning of August 31 in his church apartment.
Local media described it as an "orgy," with the Polish newspaper Fakt reporting that it involved the priest, a male sex worker, and another person participating in a sex game at the Dabrowa Gornicza property.
During the gathering, one of the participants fainted after taking erectile dysfunction pills, prompting a call for an ambulance, Fakt reported.
According to the newspaper, the priest initially denied entry to paramedics. Once they eventually entered the apartment, they saw a naked man believed to be a prostitute lying on the floor, Fakt said.
According to the AP, the priest denied refusing entry to paramedics and challenged the definition of the events as an "orgy." Insider was unable to reach him for comment.
The priest, only identified by the diocese as Fr. Tomasz Z, "committed a very serious violation of moral norms" by participating in the "great scandal," the diocese said in a news release.
It said in another news release, published last month, that the priest's participation is "not in doubt" and that the diocese had set up its own commission to investigate the event.
According to the diocese, Fr. Tomasz Z has been sent to live outside the parish and stripped of his roles and responsibilities.
He has also been ordered to take penance until the Holy See makes a decision, which the diocese said would take place after the criminal investigation concludes, according to the news release.
The status of the criminal investigation is unclear. The District Prosecutor's Office in Sosnowiec did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
Homosexuality activity is condemned by the Catholic Church, with Pope Francis recently characterizing it as a "sin" but not a crime. Priests are also largely expected to remain celibate.
