The 20 top employers to work for, according to US employees

  • Job site company Glassdoor released this year's ranking of the Best Places to Work for US employees.
  • Gainsight, a company in the tech industry, ranked at the top of the US list focused on large companies.

2022 was a great year for US workers given the strong jobs market, with millions of monthly job openings and millions of hires. The year also saw various workplace trends, like the continued popularity of remote work, people setting boundaries with what has been noted as quiet quitting, and the ongoing Great Resignation.

But even amid a strong labor market, 2022 also included many layoff announcements, wages not keeping up with inflation, and worries of a looming recession for 2023. Now at the start of this year, workers may be worried about their job if a recession happens.

Whether you're worried about job security amid recession concerns, looking to make a change in 2023, or thinking about how your company compares to other workplaces, Glassdoor published its ranking of top companies to work for for a few countries, including the US.

Gainsight, which is a "Customer Success platform provider" per its website, ranked at the top of Glassdoor's Best Places to Work list based on US employee responses. It is one of three tech companies that made up this year's top five on this list part of Glassdoor's annual Employees' Choice Awards.

The US ranking from the job site about large companies — those with at least 1,000 employees — is based on a year's worth of feedback from US employees. Reviews were from October 19, 2021 to October 17, 2022.

While what makes a company a "best" place to work may vary, Daniel Zhao, lead economist at Glassdoor, told Insider that there are some common themes that emerge when looking at the list of companies. These include flexibility, transparency, and communication.

"Especially in these times of crisis, it becomes more important for leaders to make sure that employees feel engaged and up to date with any changes that are coming down the pipeline," Zhao said.

Zhao pointed out 41 companies among the top 100, including the top-ranked Gainsight, were in the tech industry.

"Tech has been on a rollercoaster in the last two years, but I think that it is nice to see that tech is so high on the list because I think that they have really embodied flexibility in a way that many other industries have not," Zhao said.

Glassdoor's US list was published just a few days after the Bureau of Labor Statistics released employment data for December, showing another month of job gains and that jobs increased by 4.5 million overall in 2022.

But there were also layoffs happening, particularly in tech, and a recession could be on the horizon this year. While the labor market data adds to the evidence of no recession just yet, there could be one looming for 2023, and businesses may have to think about hiring and job cuts.

Zhao said that the ranking includes people's feedback on the business outlook of where they work.

"It's something that we get feedback on from employees because we know it's something that people care about and that's even more important at a time when the economy might be slowing down," Zhao said. "So I think this list is especially useful in that sense because we are considering how employees perceive their employers are doing."

Zhao said with a potentially weak economy this year, that the list "reiterates how important it is for job seekers to do their research."

"That's always true, but it's especially true at time when job security is important and there are economic headwinds," Zhao said. "It becomes more important than ever for people to really understand the health of the company that they're going to, whether you're talking about financial health or cultural health."

Below are the companies that made up the top of the US list. We included the industries they are part of according to Glassdoor and their five-point company rating where a 5.0 means "very satisfied."
