Radiologist is the best-paying job in California and three other states, with average annual pay over $300,000 in each of those states.

Many other states' highest-paying jobs are also healthcare occupations. That's based on Insider's analysis of May 2022 annual wage data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). We looked at the best-paying job for each state and Washington, DC, based on available averages.

For our analysis, Insider only looked at jobs with at least 1,000 employees in the state and for which BLS published a specific average annual wage estimate. Insider omitted jobs without an employee estimate, without a specific average annual wage amount, or without any average annual wage data at all from our analysis.

The following map shows the highest-paying occupation for every state and Washington, DC, based on our methodology. You can hover over each place to see what the job was, the average annual pay, and the estimated number of employees for that occupation.

Tennessee is just one of the 22 states where the highest-paying title in the analysis was "Physicians, All Other," as worded on the BLS website. This title, according to BLS, is noted as "all physicians not listed separately" and acts as a catchall for doctors not counted in one of the many other medical categories. The national average pay for this title is $238,700 per year. Most of the 22 states where this is the highest-paying job pay more than that, with a few paying over $300,000 on average. That includes Louisiana, which had an average of $302,970.

Different kinds of specific medical professionals were the highest-paying in other states. That includes cardiologists for Florida and New York. Cardiologist is also the best-paying occupation in the US based on national average data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The top-paying job for a few states and Washington, DC, was outside of healthcare. For instance, chief executive was the best-paying occupation in DC, New Jersey, and North Carolina, based on our methodology. For North Dakota and Vermont, the occupation was financial manager. The average for financial managers was $137,000 per year in North Dakota and $133,310 per year in Vermont.
