How HireAHelper came up with this ranking
During the pandemic, many Americans resorted to working from home, and some people moved to a new city or state, even if temporarily.
HireAHelper, a company that helps people find nearby movers and works with over 2,000 moving companies, put together a list of the best jobs for people who move a lot. Then they divided that list into jobs that can likely be accomplished remotely and those that probably cannot.
"Moving to work remotely has been a huge trend in the last few years, so we wanted to find out what are the best remote-friendly jobs that can be done from anywhere and allow someone to relocate at their pleasure," Volodymyr Kupriyanov, data analyst with HireAHelper, told Insider in an email.
To do this, they built upon previous research from University of Chicago's Jonathan Dingel and Brent Neiman that looked at jobs that could likely be done from home. Using 16 factors falling into four different kinds of weighted metrics — moveability, pay, US job demand, and ease of entering the job — HireAHelper came up with an overall ranking for 322 jobs. HireAHelper noted a third of those jobs are ones that likely can be done remotely.
The above data is from HireAHelper, and Kupriyanov told Insider that the remote work take-up is "is the average percent of all workers in a given occupation that worked remotely between May 2020 and August 2021."
Based on HireAHelper's analysis, software developers rank at the top for best remote work jobs for people who move around a lot. This job boasts a six-figure median annual wage of $110,140.
Not only does the job pay well, but the outlook is bright for this kind of job: employment for "software developers and software quality assurance analysts and testers" is projected to grow by 22% from 2020 to 2030, or by 409,500. With a lot of the work duties — such as working with code and collaborating with others — able to be done from a computer, a software developer job is perfect for those moving around a lot and interested in pursuing remote work.
The full results, including the best non-remote jobs for people who move a lot, can be found at HireAHelper.
