But then things get interesting ...

"The first thing I'd do is pay off my student loans, those of my friends and family, and set up a scholarship so at least one lucky student will never have to deal with them.

"I've often contemplated one day setting up a scholarship for Type 1 Diabetics, which is probably a purely selfish decision because I share this illness. But I know first-hand there aren't a whole lot of scholarships out there for people with this chronic illness, and the cost of managing this disease, especially when you don't have great health benefits, can be overwhelming at times.

"Take the financial pressure of paying off staggering student loans and add healthcare costs that more than double what the average American pays, and you have the recipe for some crippling angst."

... and a little more fun.

"I'd pay off my student loan debt in a heartbeat. Then a chrome-plated Lamborghini."

Some would take off around the world ...

"[I'd buy] an around-the-world plane ticket so I can travel to every country I haven't been yet. Is there any other answer?"

... and others would do it in style.

"I think I'd buy a private plane so I could fly myself and people I like around the world.

"Without the exorbitant cost of airfare, we could go on exotic vacations, even just for a weekend, even on short notice. (Although I have no idea of the cost of fuel, regulations surrounding flying private aircraft into other airports, etc. I'd have to look into that.)"

For one, private travel is just the beginning.

"1. Private plane and employ full time pilots: Never have to wait in line at an airport ever again. No more connecting flights ever.

"2. Personal chef: I'd always be able to eat delicious, healthy food without having to prep or cook it.

"3. Mountain chalet: Skiing all winter, mountain biking all summer.

"4. Driver: I hate driving. Problem solved.

"5. I would stop working for a paycheck and start working on real passion projects, like writing a book."

More than one city-dweller has their eyes on New York City real estate.

"I would buy a four-bedroom apartment in Manhattan," says one editor.

"After giving/investing/saving/etc., my first frivolous, just-because-I-can purchase would be a classic New York City brownstone, hopefully in Brooklyn Heights, my favorite neighborhood in the city," says another.

"The first thing I would do is pay off my student loans. Then I'd buy a sprawling New York penthouse and hire a designer to help me deck it out," says a third.

Some are ready to give back.

"My girlfriend’s family lost a shore home to hurricane Sandy, and they’re still fighting the insurance companies to get enough money to re-build. That’s where my money would go to first," says one editor.

"I would immediately pay off my debt and loved ones' debts under the condition that they showed me what they were paying off. Then I would buy a full year's wardrobe and invest the rest," says another.

Another is ready for a lifestyle change.

"If I won a $800M windfall, I'd buy a huge ranch in Sonoma, California. I'd then go to all of the high-kill shelters in the country and rescue animals and house them on my ranch. I'd hire a dedicated staff to care for them and offer adoption services. I'd also grow my own grapes and house a winery there.

"After that, I'd probably try to buy a professional hockey team."

Another is up for a dietary change.

"[I'd buy] Tom Brady's personal chef! I'd be so much healthier if someone was making me delicious, healthy food all the time."

One has their eyes on the field.

"[I'd buy] the Miami Marlins (or a majority stake, hopefully $800M is enough) because they need someone who can actually run that organization, and I of course can."

And another is ready to play.

"I don't think I would actually [have this height surgery] because I'm not that short, but with $700 million I would definitely think about for at least 45 seconds because my basketball game would get a lot lot better."

One of us is ready to mix responsibility with fun.

"I'm so boring: I'd pay off my mortgage first. Then buy a recording studio on a yacht."

And at least one is being realistic.

"Nothing, because you shouldn't buy a lottery ticket."
