2. Put the money in the bank.

"You don't become a smart investor when you win the lottery," said Cuban. "Don't make investments. You can put it in the bank and live comfortably. Forever. You will sleep a lot better knowing you won't lose money."

3. Take ownership.

"To create lasting wealth, you have to have an ownership mentality," said Pagliarini, author of "The Sudden Wealth Solution" and who has spent 20 years working with sudden-wealth recipients. "This means taking full responsibility for the decisions and the consequences. This shifts the focus from others to yourself. It's that ownership mentality that makes all the difference."

4. Build a financial triad.

Taking ownership doesn't mean you have to deal with the cash windfall all on your own. Put together what Pagliarini calls a "financial triad": an attorney, a tax person, and a financial adviser.

"Work with experts who have learned what it takes to create lasting wealth," he advised. "They've seen what works and what doesn't. Listen to their advice. Avoid using friends or family unless they are experts in the financial, tax, legal, and psychological issues around sudden wealth."

5. And have a close confidant.

"We are social creatures and this is a stressful event. Have at least one close confidant you can talk to and consider working with a psychologist or therapist," said Pagliarini.

6. Say 'no,' and say it often.

"Tell all your friends and relatives no," advised Cuban. "They will ask. Tell them no. If you are close to them, you already know who needs help and what they need. Feel free to help SOME, but talk to your accountant before you do anything and remember this, no one needs $1 million for anything. No one needs $100,000 for anything. Anyone who asks is not your friend."

7. Have a media plan.

"Make sure you develop a media plan before you cash in the winning ticket," said Pagliarini. "Get a spokesperson and consider camping out at a hotel instead of going home where you know your front yard will be flooded with reporters and TV cameras."

8. Don't equate the money with happiness.

"If you weren't happy yesterday, you won't be happy tomorrow," said Cuban. "It's money. It's not happiness. If you were happy yesterday, you are going to be a lot happier tomorrow. It's money. Life gets easier when you don't have to worry about the bills."
