People are wondering if a cryptic tweet President Donald Trump sent in 2013 shows he knew something about ousted New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
On Monday, The New Yorker reported that four women Schneiderman was romantically involved with accused him of physically abusing them. Schneiderman denied the allegations, and resigned from his position Monday evening.
In September 2013, Trump tweeted, "Weiner is gone, Spitzer is gone - next will be lightweight A.G. Eric Schneiderman. Is he a crook? Wait and see, worse than Spitzer or Weiner."
Former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer was forced to resign in 2008 amid a prostitution scandal, while former New York Congressman Anthony Weiner was forced to leave office in 2011 after a sexually explicit photo he sent to a woman via Twitter became public.
The 2013 tweet has now been unearthed to suggest that Trump, a fellow New Yorker who has also been accused of sexual misconduct, may have known something was going on in Schneiderman's personal life.
As attorney general, Schneiderman, a Democrat, has been a constant thorn in Trump's side by investigating his business dealings and challenging him in court.
Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., took to Twitter on Monday night to celebrate Schneiderman's downfall. He shared his father's 2013 tweet with the comment, "There is a tweet for everything!"
"Hey Eric, it's not 'role play' if only one of you is in on it," Trump Jr. continued. He also quote-tweeted a number of Schneiderman's tweets advocating for the #MeToo movement, saying "This didn't age well."
After sharing The New Yorker story encouraging everyone to read it, and sharing the 2013 Trump tweet, counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway quote-tweeted the same Schneiderman tweet that Trump Jr. did, saying "Gotcha."
Schneiderman will be replaced by Barbara Underwood, who has served as Solicitor General since 2007.
