The Times Higher Education (THE) recently rolled out world university rankings which featured only six Indian universities in the top 500.
Among the Indian institutions, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indore and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay were ranked in the top 500 in the global list.
However, even these elite institutions from India did not make it to the top 300. This happened for the first time in the last seven years — despite an increase in the number of Indian institutions featuring on the list.
Yet, the list editors believe that India has a lot of potential. “The Indian government has strong ambitions to boost the global standing of its top universities and attract foreign students, academics and research collaboration. It needs to back them up with high levels of investment and increasing global competition,” THE rankings editor Ellie Bothwell told TOI.
