One of the craziest Porsches ever will be at a major car-collector event
The car was owned and driven daily by the rock legend from 1968 until her death at the age of 27 from an overdose on October 4, 1970.
According to the Amelia Island Concours:
The paint is not original, however. Joplin's family continued to use the car after her death and eventually returned it to its original "dolphin grey" color.
Two artists then faithfully recreated the unique paint scheme from available photos, and it was loaned to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for almost 20 years. In 2007 it was featured in the exhibit "Summer of Love- Art of the Psychedelic Era" at the Whitney Museum in New York. The car sold for $1.76 million at an RM Sotheby's auction in December, smashing through the house's pre-sale estimate of $400,000 to $600,000.
The 2016 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance will be held at the The Golf Club of Amelia Island, March 11-13.
