Ola and Uber may need to get their fare calculators verified by the government to prevent customer grievance

Soon the government may ask app based taxi aggregators like Uber and Ola to get their software for fare calculation verified from Ministry of electronics and IT. This would also be applicable for the black and yellow taxi that operates on their platforms.

The government expects this move to solve the doubts that looms large on cab operators and drivers.

Having being subjected to a variety of setbacks including driver vetting, surge pricing, and safety issues, this would certainly bring a relief both for the aggregators and passengers alike.

"The fare calculation mechanism for all modes of public transport are authorised by government. We need to do the same for taxi aggregators so their system becomes credible and there are no doubts on the software they use for calculating fares, taking into account distance travelled and time taken," a senior government official told the Economic Times.

A meeting of the committee of state transport ministers has already deliberated on the issue and guidelines for taxi aggregators are likely to be issued soon and will include a cap on the maximum fare that could be charged.

The ministry has already been informed about this. Also with many states banning diesel taxis, the cab operators need to follow fuel norms strictly.

"We will also propose that the aggregators should take the black and yellow taxis on their platform so that there's no dissent from the local taxi companies," the official told ET.
