Without disclosing total figures, a company spokesperson said that Amazon India served its customers without any technical glitches on the big day.

To compete with 'The Big Billion Days' sale of its rival Flipkart and Snapdeal's 'Diwali Sale' that were also announced on the same time, the e-tailer is running a mega sale for five days till October 17.

However, India's biggest e-tailer Flipkart has said that it had sold 10 lakh products in the first 10 hours of its sale. The highest traffic on the Flipkart website emanated from Bengaluru, Delhi and Chennai among metros and Ludhiana, Lucknow and Bhopal among other cities.

While Amazon India is conducting the sale on both its website and mobile application, unlike Flipkart which is running an app-only sale, Amazon also saw 70% traffic coming from mobile phones.

According to Amazon India, the company has attracted lakhs of new customers from Aurangabad, Malappuram, Dhanbad, Kannur, Tiruchirappalli, Jamshedpur and other cities.

The first day of the sale was a big occasion for small and medium business owners in India as sellers witnessed eight to 10 times jump in their daily sales, said its spokesperson.

Snapdeal, which conducted a sale of electronic goods on October 12, also announced that the sale had exceeded its expectation with an overwhelming response from customers across the country. The company recorded an increase of 17 times in revenue and was set to cross $100 million (about Rs 651 crore) in sales by the end of the day, it said.
