APTwitter is having a field day with President Obama's comment about a "Jedi Mind Meld," apparently conflating the Jedi Mind Trick from Star Wars with the Vulcan Mind Meld from Star Trek.

However, he's technically correct, assuming he's read a number of Star Wars novelizations.

From Wookiepedia's article on the "Force Meld":

Force Meld, otherwise known as Jedi meld or Battle meld, was a technique where a number of Force users joined their minds together through the Force, drawing strength from each other. A refinement of battle meditation, it was known to the ancient Jedi, though dangerous. While battle meditation could influence both the Force-sensitives and the insensitives of both sides, Force Meld concentrates on coordinating and improving the Force-sensitives of the user's side.

In short, one of two things has happened.

The first possibility is that the President mixed up two concepts from classic Science Fiction works.

The other is that the man once compared to Spock is much more of a geek than we once imagined reading novels like Young Jedi Knights: The Emperor's Plague, Enemy Lines II: Rebel Stand and Dark Nest III: The Swarm War.
