A 20-year-old New York University student was seriously injured early Sunday morning after the stairs collapsed at an off-campus rooftop party, The New York Post reports.

Tao Niu - a student at NYU's Stern School of Business - reportedly tried to jump the stairs at an apartment building on 10th Street and 2nd Avenue when he crashed through the marble landing. One friend of Niu's told The Post, he "was barely moving" after his fall and he was "definitely a little intoxicated and probably stumbled down."

A representative for New York City's Office of Emergency Management told The Post that Niu "broke through a couple of landings." He is in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital with broken ribs and a fractured ankle.

Niu's fall left around 40 party-goers stranded on the roof of the building, and the New York Fire Department was forced to use buckets and ladders to transport many of them down to street level.
