Nordstrom Pianists Are Slowly Disappearing

Jan 30, 2013, 21:33 IST

Nordstrom has traditionally employed pianists who perform live for shoppers — a nice little upscale touch at the high-end department store.

But they've been disappearing.

What was once a defining part of the Nordstrom brand is becoming an increasingly rare feature. Only 30 of Nordstrom's 110+ stores have pianists now, C.R. Roberts at The News Tribune reported.

Nordstrom typically hires its pianists part time and they perform in the stores one or two days each week, according to The L.A. Times.

“It’s a store-by-store decision. It’s just part of the evolving experience in the stores," a Nordstrom spokesperson told The News Tribune. “It just depends on what the store wants to do. I think the store manager, like a lot of store managers, heard from some customers that wanted a different type of experience.”

Some stores are moving to recorded music, which is "more modern," the spokesperson said.
