In a Wall Street Journal interview published on Friday, Nissan chief Executive Carlos Ghosn, announced that instead of making batteries for its future electric cars, Nissan might look forward to Renault, its alliance partner.
The Japanese multinational automobile manufacturer is likely to use LG Chem batteries, confirmed the alliance CEO. Nissan, however, shares a battery-making partnership with Japan based NEC Corp. that supplies batteries for Nissan’s flagship electric car, the Leaf.
Elaborating the battery business of Nissan, Ghosn said, "We have opened to competition our battery business in order to make sure we have the best batteries." "For the moment, we consider that the best battery maker is LG," he further added.
A spokesman for LG Chem said, “We’re open to all possibilities.”
A prior Reuters report also stated that Ghosn was preparing to cut battery production by Nissan's AESC joint venture with NEC Corp and instead use LG packs, stoking alliance tensions as he pursues closer integration.
