Nintendo just announced a mess of new stuff - from a brand new game starring Luigi to a long-awaited new entry in the "Animal Crossing" franchise. And that's barely scratching the surface!

In just over half an hour in a "Nintendo Direct" video presentation on Thursday evening, Nintendo pulled back the curtain on a variety of exciting new games coming to the Nintendo Switch this year and next.

Let's dive in:

1. A new "Luigi's Mansion" game, this time for the Nintendo Switch.

If you're old like me, you may remember playing an early Nintendo GameCube game named "Luigi's Mansion." It came out way back in 2001!

It wasn't anything like a typical Super Mario game — instead of jumping on Goombas and clearing treacherous gaps, Luigi was sneaking around a haunted mansion with a flashlight and a vacuum. His goal: Stun the villainous ghosts with his flashlight, then vacuum them up. Naturally!

The game got a sequel, many years later: "Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon" for the Nintendo 3DS console. But the series has been absent from a Nintendo home console since that original game. Soon, in 2019, a third entry in the series is finally coming: "Luigi's Mansion 3."

In the brief video shown, the game looks like a much prettier version of the previous games — which makes a lot of sense, as it's planned for launch in 2019 on the Nintendo Switch.

2. A brand new "Animal Crossing" game.

A brand new "Animal Crossing"? Yes, a brand new "Animal Crossing"! If there's one game that Nintendo Switch owners have been clamoring for, it's a new "Animal Crossing" game.

The beloved home-making game that's endeared so many fans across nearly 20 years is finally coming to the Nintendo Switch. The tiny bit of tease that Nintendo offered during its Nintendo Direct presentation isn't intended to directly represent gameplay, but I'd be surprised if it didn't look similar when the game arrives at some point in 2019.

3. A new game for the Nintendo Switch from the company that makes Pokémon games, Game Freak.

The delightfully-named Japanese game studio Game Freak — the folks behind the core Pokémon franchise that Nintendo has published for decades — announced a brand new game on Thursday evening: It's called "Town," and it looks like a charming role-playing game.

In "Town," you'll uncover the mysterious story of one small village that's been overrun by — what else? — a bunch of evil monsters. By working with townsfolk and employing a unique turn-based battle system, you'll learn more about the town and hopefully help take down the scourge plaguing the...ahem...town.

"Town" is expected in 2019.

4. A new-ish Super Mario game for the Switch that collects two old games into one package — with some bonus features.

Love Super Mario games but only when they're in two dimensions? For anyone who wasn't convinced by "Super Mario Odyssey," Nintendo has the "New Super Mario Bros." franchise — a 2D, old-school style Super Mario game that's a direct successor to the very first "Super Mario Bros." for the NES.

"New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe" takes the Wii U launch game "New Super Mario Bros. U" and combines it with the additional "New Super Luigi U" content that came out after the original game — then it adds new playable characters and puts it all on the Switch. Nintendo's promising a whopping 164 courses in the game. It's got a scheduled launch date of January 11, 2019.

5. NES-style gamepads that physically attach to the Switch, giving it a delightfully retro look.

With the upcoming launch of Nintendo's first paid online service, Nintendo Switch Online, on September 18, Nintendo is about to launch 20 classic Nintendo Entertainment System games on the Switch.

Thus, now is the perfect time for Nintendo to announce and release a pair of classic NES gamepads that are compatible with the Nintendo Switch. The pair cost $60, and operate like individual Joy-Con gamepads.

They even snap onto the side of the Switch to recharge, like so:

It's pretty adorable. The classic-style, wireless NES gamepads are expected to ship in "mid-December" according to Nintendo, and cost $60 as a pair. It's not clear if they'll be sold separately.

6. A ton of "Final Fantasy" games are coming to the Switch.

No, the remaster of "Final Fantasy VII" still isn't available, but that isn't stopping Japanese role-playing game giant Square Enix from re-releasing a smattering of older "Final Fantasy" games on the Nintendo Switch.

One of those games is even "Final Fantasy VII"! Here's the full list of "Final Fantasy" games headed to the Switch:

  • "Final Fantasy VII"
  • "Final Fantasy IX"
  • "Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster"
  • "Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age"
  • "Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition HD (available now)
  • "World of Final Fantasy Maxima" (Nov. 6)
  • "Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon Every Buddy!" ("This winter")
  • "Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition" (2019)

That's a lot of "Final Fantasy"!

7. Against all odds, the Nintendo 3DS is continuing to get new games.

Despite the fact that Nintendo's Switch has overtaken the handheld 3DS console in monthly sales numbers and consumer interest, and despite the fact that Nintendo's 3DS consoles are getting pretty long in the tooth at this point, Nintendo continues to produce games for the aging console.

A quartet of new 3DS games were shown off during Nintendo's video presentation on Thursday, including "Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn" — a 3DS version of the Wii game with some new stuff — and a 3DS version of the original "Luigi's Mansion" game from the GameCube.

"Kirby" isn't expected until next year, but "Luigi's Mansion" is scheduled for launch on October 12.

If you're more an RPG player, Nintendo's got a remastered "Mario & Luigi" game on the way, with a January 11, 2019 launch date, with "Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story." It'll include a remastered version of the original game, which first came out in 2009, as well as a new story called "Bowser Jr.'s Journey."

8. A new version of cult-classic "Katamari Damacy" is coming to the Switch this year.

In a surprise twist, Nintendo and Bandai Namco are giving new life to a cult classic game: "Katamari Damacy."

The bizarre, delightful PlayStation 2 game is getting remastered with high-definition visuals and new play styles in "Katamari Damacy Reroll." If you've never spent any time rolling up the object-littered worlds of "Katamari Damacy," never interacted with THE KING OF THE COSMOS, then you're in luck: "Katamari Damacy Reroll" arrives digitally on November 30, and at retail later this year.

Just get ready to have its theme song stuck in your head for the next forever.
