When the Supreme Court of India struck down the draconian Section 66 A of the IT Act in its entirety, for once we felt that we have won the right to enjoy free speech on the Internet. But did we? The ongoing net neutrality debate tells us otherwise—and has added more to the doubts that Freedom of speech and expression won’t come in easy to Indians. Especially to those who don’t like to mince their words in public and on social media.
Take, for instance, the case of the net neutrality video done by AIB; the video went viral over the weekend but has now been ‘temporarily’ removed from the Web for some unknown reasons. This has given rise to another debate: Is net neutrality going away from the Indian Internet industry? Would we ever get to have complete freedom on what we want to see, post or read on the Web?
