Senior Supreme Court advocate Mukul Rohatgi has been appointed the new Attorney General of the country. Rohatgi was the front-runner for the post as he is considered to be close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.“My priority would be to streamline the litigation process and cut down litigation between government departments and public sector undertakings. The new government will co-operate in this aspect as this government wants to change a lot,” said Rohatgi.
Rohatgi was the BJP’s lawyer and defended the party in several cases, including the Babri Masjid demolition case. He also defended the BJP general secretary, Varun Gandhi, in a case regarding his alleged provocative speech in Uttar Pradesh in 2011. Only recently, the senior lawyer appeared for the yoga guru Baba Ramdev in a case related to his ‘honeymoon’ comment against Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi.
Rohatgi had served as Additional Solicitor General in the Vajpayee government. He is also considered to be close to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.
“They are my good friends. They will help me in my endeavour,” said Rohatgi about the ministers.
