Both Sen. Tim Kaine and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence came out swinging during the vice presidential debate on Tuesday.

Early on in the debate, Kaine, Hillary Clinton's running mate, attacked Pence on the economic plan of his running mate, Donald Trump.

"On the economy, there's a fundamental choice for the American electorate - do you want a 'you're hired' president in Hillary Clinton, or do you want a 'you're fired' president in Donald Trump?" Kaine said. "I think that's not such a hard choice.

Pence shook his head, but held his tongue.

After Kaine finished his answer, Pence got a question about Trump's 1995 tax returns, which The New York Times reported on over the weekend.

Pence deflected the question temporarily to go after Kaine for his apparently canned response.

"First, let me say, I appreciated the 'you're hired,' 'you're fired' thing, senator, you use that a whole lot and I think your running mate used a lot of pre-done lines," Pence said. "What you all just heard out there is more taxes, $2 trillion in more spending, more deficits, more debt, more government."
