Mike Huckabee slams the modern concept of love
Huckabee, a 2016 presidential candidate, said in a Sunday CNN interview that people have become too "sentimental and emotional" in how they see their relationships.
"One of the mistakes we've even heard over the course of the same-sex marriage debate is that 'marriage is all about just love, and feeling, and sentimentality.' And regardless, heterosexual marriage is largely in trouble today because people see it as a selfish means of pleasing self rather than a committed relationship in which the focus is upon meeting the needs of the partner," he said.
Huckabee, an outspoken social conservative, made the comments while discussing the Supreme Court's recent ruling in favor of nationwide same-sex marriage.
The former governor also argued that the new definition of love will hurt people in opposite-sex, same-sex, and polygamous relationships.
"And that sense of selfishness and the redefinition of love as to something that is purely sentimental and emotional has been destructive," he added. "And I think it will prove to be destructive in every definition of marriage - be it heterosexual, or homosexual, or polygamy, or wherever the marriage redefinition ends up taking us over the course of the next few years."
