Microsoft's final Windows 10 upgrade nag is its worst yet - here's how to get around it

Jul 1, 2016, 23:49 IST

After the free Windows 10 offer expires July 29th, Microsoft will finally spare Windows 7 and 8 users those annoying, nagging messages urging them to upgrade.

But with less than a month on the clock, Microsoft is preparing one final push to get you to go to Windows 10, as ZDnet's Ed Bott first reported.

Over the next few weeks, you might see a full-screen ad that takes over your screen that looks like this:

Microsoft

If you just click "Remind me later," Microsoft says in an official support page, you could see this message as many as three times.

But here's something very important to note. It kind of blends into the background, but there's a "Do not notify me again" link in the bottom-right corner. Here's the button you want:

Microsoft

You won't see the message at all if you've turned off notifications from the "Get Windows 10" app, if you've previously uninstalled Windows 10 after accepting the free upgrade, or under a few other conditions laid out in the support article.

Microsoft has been highly aggressive with this free Windows 10 offer campaign, in service to its self-given goal of hitting one billion devices running the operating system within the next couple of years.

But that same aggressiveness has earned it the ire of customers irritated with the annoying and occassionally misleading Windows 10 upgrade ads. A full-screen ad isn't going to soothe anyone's temper. At least it's the last one, right?
