President Donald Trump's longtime lawyer Michael Cohen reportedly pressured "Late Night" host Seth Meyers to apologize for making fun of Trump at the 2011 White House Correspondents' Dinner in exchange for having Trump on his show back in 2015.
At the time, Trump was initially open to the idea of appearing on Meyers's show, but it all fell apart after Cohen demanded Meyers apologize to Trump for jokes he'd made and the late night host refused, Politico reports.
Meyers told Politico he has zero regrets about the jokes he made about the future president back in 2011.
"When I look back at the night the reason I don't have any regrets about it, even with the outcome, is [Trump] so deserved it," Meyers said.
The comedian noted he made this joke during the height of the "birtherism stuff," in which Trump infamously perpetuated conspiracy theory regarding former President Barack Obama's nationality and place of birth. Meyers said he believes Trump fully "deserved" to be ridiculed for this reason.
At the 2011 White House Correspondents' Dinner, Meyers joked, "Trump has been saying he will run for president as a Republican, which is surprising, since I just assumed he was running as a joke."
Trump was reportedly humiliated by the moment and some have questioned whether it's part of what motivated him to run in 2016.
Regardless of the fact that Trump ultimately became president, Meyers also told Politico he's happy to see that Trump apparently still holds a grudge against him over the jokes he made at his expensive all those years ago.
"I was delighted to see that he was still thinking about [that]," Meyers said. "I'm not that surprised, because it strikes me that moving on from grudges is not something that [Trump] does with any regularity."
Trump referenced Meyers' past performance in a tweet after this year's controversial White House Correspondents' Dinner hosted by Michelle Wolf.
"The White House Correspondents' Dinner was a failure last year, but this year was an embarrassment to everyone associated with it," Trump tweeted. "The filthy 'comedian' totally bombed (couldn't even deliver her lines - much like the Seth Meyers weak performance). Put Dinner to rest, or start over!"
In response, Meyers tweeted, "You remembered!!! Happy Anniversary, Boo."
