Mexico's next president Andrés Manuel López Obrador is no fan of Donald Trump.
López Obrador was heavily critical of Trump throughout his election campaign, attacking the US president's border wall policy and comparing his comments about Mexicans to the way Nazis spoke about Jews.
The former mayor of Mexico City, who swept to victory with more than 53% of the vote on Sunday, even published a book that criticizes America's influence in Mexico.
The book is titled "Oye, Trump," which translates to "Listen up, Trump," and includes snippets of his speeches. The 64-year-old has pledged to tackle violence and poverty in Mexico - and to root out corruption. These are issues that Trump has repeatedly used to justify a strict immigration policy and the construction of a border wall, which promised during his 2016 election campaign.
Trump congratulated Lopez Obrador on Twitter on Monday, referencing work that the two countries will do together.
In his speech to supporters on Monday, López Obrador said Mexico would forge a new relationship with the US that is "rooted in mutual respect and in
Lopez Obrador, often referred to by his initials "AMLO," will formally take office on December 1.
Congratulations to Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on becoming the next President of Mexico. I look very much forward to working with him. There is much to be done that will benefit both the United States and Mexico!
