Meerkat makes its livestreaming app available for all Android users - beating Periscope to the punch

The wait is over - Meerkat is now officially available for all Android users, and you can download it today over at the Google Play store.

While Meerkat has been available to some Android users who were accepted into the open beta earlier this month, the app is now opening its doors to everyone, regardless of whether you signed up or not.

Meerkat announced the news via Twitter on Friday.

While livestreaming has increasingly gained traction among the tech press, news organizations, and celebrities on Twitter, the two most popular livestreaming apps - Meerkat and Periscope - first debuted on iOS, leaving Android users wondering when they'd get to try it out.

According to data from social analytics firm Topsy, Periscope continues to see more activity than Meerkat, with Periscope typically seeing five to ten thousand more tweets a day compared to Meerkat.

Android users are still unable to access Periscope, however, so Meerkat may have a new advantage.
