McKinsey bypasses IIT placement process to hire students through in-house interviews

In an unexpected turn of events, star recruiter McKinsey is hiring graduates directly through its alumni network, website and social media, bypassing the placement process at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campuses. McKinsey will be thus hiring graduates from the IIT class of 2016 through interviews conducted at its offices.
As expected, IIT officials fear that this may eventually undermine the sanctity of the placement process at India's premier engineering institutes. Placements at all older IITs are set to kick off on December 1.

McKinsey partner Sasi Sunkara told ET the consultancy firm decided to take this route as all IITs begin placements on the same day - December 1. This, he said, limits the firm's visits only to a few campuses, while it wanted partners to meet all the candidates before making an offer.

"We want to be inclusive. This process enhances diversity of candidates and ensures proper calibration across candidates of a similar profile. It also helps us meet 100% of our shortlisted candidates and conduct the complete interview process," Sunkara added. "In the campus recruiting process, this is not guaranteed due to spot offers, and PPO (pre-placement offers) candidates withdrawing from the process."
