Mark Zuckerberg reportedly considered buying a 56,000-acre ranch in Hawaii

In October 2014, news broke that Facebook head Mark Zuckerberg had purchased a 750-acre property on the North Shore of Kauai.

He paid a reported $200 million for two parcels: one at a former sugar-cane farm called the Kahu'aina Plantation, and a second at Pila'a Beach.

According to multiple sources speaking with Pacific Business News, Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan almost bought a much bigger Hawaiian property instead, the 56,774-acre Molokai Ranch, on the island of Molokai.

The Molokai Ranch is the seventh-largest property in all of Hawaii, taking up nearly a third of Molokai's land space. The Pacific Business News said Zuckerberg developed an interest in the property during a recent hunting trip to the area.

In 2011, the billionaire vowed to only eat the meat of animals he had killed himself.

It's unknown how much the ranch would cost, but it would have to be a lot considering how large the property is.

Though they eventually decided not to buy the ranch, Zuckerberg and Chan have a strong presence in Hawaii.

In addition to the parcels at the Kahu'aina Plantation and Pila'a Beach, the couple also owns several units at the ONE Ala Moana luxury condo complex in Honolulu. Condos there range from $1.6 million to $9 million. They purchased the units in 2013.
