Manhunt Underway For A Convicted Killer Who Was Mistakenly Released
Cook County Sheriff via Chicago Sun-Times Cops and FBI agents were searching Thursday night into Friday morning for a convicted murderer after Illinois officials mistakenly let him go.
Steven Robbins, who was serving time in an Indiana prison following a 2004 murder conviction, was also facing drug and gun charges in Cook County, Ill., ABC 7 reported Friday.
He was released from Indiana State Prison Tuesday and transferred to Cook County.
But when those charges were dropped, Robbins was accidentally released from a Chicago jail Wednesday night, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
“He walked out of Gate 5 [of the jail] and hasn’t been seen by authorities since,” Cook County Sheriff's Department spokesman Frank Bilecki told the Sun-Times.
Authorities reportedly discovered the mix-up Thursday afternoon when they were preparing to send him back to Indiana.
The sheriff's department is investigating how such a mistake could have happened, according to NBC News
A warrant for his arrest has been issued in Illinois and Indiana and cops from both states, as well as federal agents are searching for the 5-feet-5-inches tall black man who weighs about 190 pounds.
